Saturday night football, but not as you know it.
The call went out for players to participate in a game of AFL 9s during half time in the Grand Final replay between Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans at the MCG, and 10 players from Diamond Valley answered the call to play against a team from Williamstown (with a conscript Andy Robertson).
In a close match (no-one kept score), this bunch of over-age footballers played with the same energy and excitement as the little league players who would normally have played during the half-time break. You couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces before, during or after the game. Let’s hope they enjoy every game this year as much as this sopecial game.
Thanks to Bruce Chaplin from AFL Masters for organising the match, and for the Willy guys for helping make up the opposition, and all the family members and supporters for coming along to help share the experience.
Well played Joey Marino, Mick Grinder, Brian King, Brian Dillon, Brian Westcott, Steve Giles, Vince Cavalieri, George Georgiou, Peter Hart, Alan Williams and Darren Sommerville.
