2012 Anzac Day

This year the Club has started a new annual challenge against Essendon Superules where the two teams will play each year for the Heart Kids Cup.

Both clubs are proud supporters of this worthy charity, and the competition for the new trophy was expected to be fierce.  President Chris Richardson led the way by working closely with Essendon’s president to have the match played on ANZAC Day. Whilst the goal was to play at Punt Road Oval, we were unable to achieve this but were most fortunate to obtain the use of Heidelberg’s ground and facilities for this important day.

Representatives from the RSL and Heart Kids joined the players of both sides in a traditional ANZAC service with the Last Post, the Ode, the Rouse and the raising of the AustralianFlag.

The wet weather took some of the gloss off the day, but Essendon played great team football and provided Diamond Valley of a reminder of why they are the reigning premiers and had strong win.  The winner of the Marks – Fletcher trophy for the best player was also won by an Essendon player.  The trophy was dedicated to the memory of Peter Marks from Diamond Valley, and Carol Fletcher – the wife of Ian Fletcher, Essendon stalwart and MAFV President.
